Sweet Strawberry Communities
We, the Johnson family, are hardworking stewards of this beautiful farm that dates back to the 17th century. It has been a long-standing destination for outdoor enjoyment for the New Jersey community since 2013. We welcome families from across the region, including:
New York City
Philadelphia
Hightstown
Princeton
Lakewood
Hammonton
Jersey City
Jackson
Mount Holly
Asbury
Bordentown
Pemberton
Trenton
Toms River
Columbus
Our group was mid-sized, six adults and three kids and everyone was accommodated at the farm. I appreciate that they offer water and quart containers for the “you cut flowers”, something a farm we went to earlier this year did not provide. The hay ride was fully covered, so it was comfortable and a good duration. Kids loved the animals, they were clean and friendly. We saw the mini horses, donkey, goats, and chickens.
The farm offers many seasonal activities and we will be coming back to try them out. I’m happy we found Johnson Locust Farm.
Strawberry Picking Tips
Choose Bright Red Berries: Strawberries don’t ripen after they’re picked, so go for the fully red ones for the best flavor.
Twist, Don’t Tug: Give the berry a gentle twist to pick it—this helps keep the plants healthy and makes harvesting easier.
Dress for the Fields: Closed-toe shoes are best for walking the uneven ground, and don’t forget sunscreen so you can stay comfortable while you pick.
Don’t forget to take photos while you’re here—it’s the perfect backdrop for a fun day on the farm.
Spring Field Trips in NJ
Strawberry picking season is one of the best times to experience farm life in New Jersey—especially for groups and school visits looking for something hands-on and engaging.
Our Spring Field Trips include a guided hayride to the strawberry fields, where students learn how strawberries are grown and harvested directly from our farmers. Each guest gets to pick their own quart of fresh strawberries to take home, along with time to visit our animal farm and enjoy the grounds.
It’s a fun and educational way to turn your strawberry-picking visit into a full farm experience.

Frequently Asked Questions About Strawberry Picking in NJ
When is strawberry season?
Strawberry season at Johnson’s Locust Hall Farm begins in May and runs through mid-June. Our 2026 season kicks off on May 9th. We recommend booking your reservation early, as our picking times fill up quickly!
How long is the strawberry season?
Strawberry season lasts for about 3 weeks, depending on weather conditions and crop availability. Since this is our first crop of the season, peak times can vary. For the best picking experience, it’s a good idea to visit earlier in the season or follow us on Instagram for real-time updates.
How to tell if a strawberry is good?
Look for strawberries that are bright red from top to bottom with a natural shine and fresh green caps. Strawberries don’t ripen after they’re picked, so choosing fully red berries ensures the sweetest, juiciest flavor. Avoid berries with white or green tips, as they won’t develop the same taste.
